Unbraided Pride
Last week Apple launched their collection of Pride Bands for the Apple Watch, a tradition that has been occurring annually since 2016. This year featured a new Nike Sport Loop & a striking Braided Solo Loop. In particular, this years' Braided Solo Loop and matching watch face for the Apple Watch expanded inclusiveness by recognizing the colours of the Transgender pride flag and stripes to honour the community's black and brown members.
Here's Apple's description:
"The Pride Edition Braided Solo Loop artfully weaves together the original rainbow colors with those drawn from various Pride flags to represent the breadth of diversity among LGBTQ+ experiences and the history of a movement that has spanned generations. Black and brown symbolize Black and Latinx communities, in addition to those who have passed away from or are living with HIV/AIDS, while light blue, pink, and white represent transgender and nonbinary individuals."
In addition to the new bands, a select number of high-profile Flagship locations have added a new art installation featuring the threads of the new woven band deconstructed and arranged in a beautiful geometric pattern! As soon as I saw it, I couldn't resist the challenge of taking a stab at recreating this stunning design as a Pride wallpaper for my devices.
Working in Pixelmator Pro, I started with three layers in creating this design. The topmost layer is consists of a while pattern with a circular cutout. The middle layer consists of 120 threads spanning the cutout length, with each group of 10 strands overlapping in a counterclockwise direction, creating the unique geometry. Finally, the bottom layer consists of a colour-matched square. Shadowing is applied across all three layers to provide a sense of depth and dimensionality to the design. It's a design I'm incredibly proud to share with the Apple community for Pride Month this year.
I've included the original soft grey wallpaper I started with and a stunning dark wallpaper that I might adore even more than the original. Both are available and sized for Macs (up to 6K), iPhones, & iPads (up to iPad Pro 12.9"). And of course, I also include a dynamic wallpaper for your Mac that changes whether you're in light or dark mode.
