A brief history of how the iMac Pro came to be & the exclusive wallpaper that came bundled with it.

In 2017, Apple released the iMac Pro, an interim alternative to the languishing Mac Pro lineup, which had gone years without a meaningful update. Apple even famously hosted a roundtable with select tech journalists in early 2017 where they acknowledged that a new Mac Pro was in the works as their cylindrical trash can Mac Pro had found itself in "a bit of a thermal corner."

While pros waited for a new Mac Pro (which was ultimately showcased in 2019), Apple unveiled the iMac Pro, which was unveiled at WWDC 2017 & released on December 14, 2017.

Looking identical to the 27-inch iMac save for a Space Grey finish, the iMac Pro was entirely re-engineered on the inside. Featuring Intel Xeon W processors (w. 8-18 cores), up to 256GB of internal memory, better graphics, gigabit ethernet, additional Thunderbolt 3.0 ports, a wholly reworked cooling system, and a 1080p webcam, the iMac Pro became Apple's most powerful iMac ever. The starting price for this all-in-one began at $4,999 (consider that the starting price for a base level iMac started at $1,799) and could be specced up to $13,348.

But all of that is just a rambling history lesson. I'm writing because the iMac Pro launched with an exclusive ink cloud wallpaper, though it eventually made its way to others via OS X 10.13. And today, December 14, 2024, is the 7th anniversary of the iMac Pro, so I wanted to share the wallpaper alongside cropped versions for the iPad & iPhone. Enjoy!
