Step aside High-Dynamic Range; we're living in the era of Extreme Dynamic Range. That means displays that offer up to 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratios, and over 1,000,000,000 colours. Apple products have never looked so good and have never been so good to look at.

Displays from Apple have done quantum leaps over the past few years, from curved OLED panels across the iPhone & Apple Watch, variable refresh ProMotion displays in the latest Pro products, to miniLED panels on the newest iPad & MacBook Pros. XDR is just the latest display technology Apple has been rolling out across the line, which began with the unveiling of the Pro Display XDR.

Apple's foray back into the standalone display market came at WWDC 2019, when Apple announced the Pro Display XDR. With a 32-inch 6K display, the Pro Display XDR was the first Apple panel to achieve up to 1600 nits of brightness enabled by a grid of 576 LEDs, allowing deep contrasts approaching what you would find on an OLED panel. It is a jaw-dropping display with an equally jaw-dropping price, starting at $4,999 with the option of purchasing an infamously pricy $999 Pro Stand. Add AppleCare+ & nano-texture to the mix, and you are looking at a display that costs seven grand (but at least you get a polishing cloth free of charge).

Apple's tongue-in-cheek mantra that the back of their products look nicer than the front of the competitors comes to life with the lattice pattern that debuted on both the MacPro and Pro Display XDR. This three-dimensional circular lattice increases the surface area for air to pass into the product, allowing for more efficient airflow and heat dissipation, all of which enables and enables higher levels of performance and display brightness.

Here’s a quote from Apple’s White Paper describing the enclosure:

“The enclosure on Pro Display XDR is designed to quietly and efficiently  cool the system, and plays a critical role in enabling the display to sustain   an extreme level of brightness indefinitely. The lattice pattern machined into   the aluminum has many advantages. It more than doubles the surface area exposed to air, facilitating additional airflow and acting as a heat sink.”

It's this beautiful lattice that became the inspiration for my latest collection of wallpapers. Composed in Pixelmator and consisting of 10 overlapping layers, I wanted these wallpapers to have a sense of depth when applied to the display. To achieve this, a lot of time was spent tweaking the shading and contrast between layers to create a design that was both dimensional & highly detailed.
