Black Unity
A wallpaper in celebration of Black History Month.
For several years, Apple has celebrated Black History Month through special Today at Apple sessions, Fitness+ workouts, and highlighting black artists, musicians, developers, authors, & podcasters through its platforms. And over the last two years, Apple has expanded by releasing "Black Unity" bands, which Apple promotes as being "designed by Black creatives and allies throughout Apple to celebrate and acknowledge Black history and culture."
In 2021, Apple released the Black Unity Sport band & Unity watch face inspired by the colours of the Pan-African flag, with support for organizations including the Tides Foundation, European Network Against Racism, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the International Institute on Race; Equality and Human Rights, and more. The band released was a tri-colour, compression moulded fluoroelastomer band with a pin laser-etched with the word: "Truth. Power. Solidarity" underneath. The Unity watch face featured an ever-shifting pattern, which Apple describes as "honoring the craft of quilting, the Unity watch face displays a pattern of irregular shapes that dynamically changes as Apple Watch moves, creating a unique face for everyone."

In 2022, Apple again released a band and watch face pairing during Black History Month. Their Black Braided Solo Loop is speckled with colours of the Pan-African Flag. And the complimentary Unity Lights face is a gorgeous technological feat of 2D ray-tracing which dynamically simulates the lights and shadows radiating from the glowing dials. Apple writes that this year's face was inspired by "Afrofuturism, a philosophy that explores the Black experience through a narrative of science, technology, and self-empowerment." It's a topic that I must admit I know little about but seek to learn more & understand better. And during February, select retail locations have begun featuring Black Unity displays promoting Apple watch.
In addition to Apple releasing its own set of Black Unity wallpapers this year, their Apple Watch displays inspired me to create a collection of speckled wallpapers myself. These wallpapers are available for the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch. Enjoy.
